Research interests

As a research fellow and head of Sustainability Research Unit at the Institut Sultan Iskandar, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in established international linkages and collaborative research project,  Dr Irina also a senior lecturer at Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, UTM. Previously, Dr. Irina had lead the UTM Campus Sustainability (UTM-CS) since 2011 which initiate campus sustainability initiatives by using ‘Campus Living Lab’ approach. She was a project coordinator for low carbon campus initiatives, established the strategic institutional linkages between UTM CS and Green Metrics World University Ranking, International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) and CONNECT Asia, UNESCO Jakarta Office. Her contribution to UTM CS recognized in “the 20 Malaysian Woman Roles in Sustainable Development by MIT-UTM Sustainable Cities Program in 2015.

Biography

Irina Safitri Zen, PhD has recognized as an environmental management & sustainability expert with 15 years of experience.

(1999 – now) in various research projects, consultancy and applied research. Dr Irina has been involves and invited in many conferences, workshop, seminar and taskforce at university, national and international level. She is also author/co-author in more than 50 publications at international journal, books and media including refereed journal papers, consultancy reports and conference paper.

Currently by using her research portfolio, she is continue her passion in sustainability by leading an applied research on Campus Living Lab as a model for HEI in Malaysia”, a collaborative works between UTM and LaTrobe University under the Malaysia Research University Network (MRUN) and Australia Innovative Research University (IRU) (2015-17). She is also co-researcher of the Smart City capacity building action research between ISI and Future Cities Catapult, United Kingdom (2015-16) and part of an expert team in Malaysia Environmental Performances Index (EPI) (2011 – now).

She is a member for selected and strategic working group such as Sustainable Development Solution Network (SDSN) Malaysia Chapter (2014 – now) under MIGHT (Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High Technology), Malaysia Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) (2013 – now) under Economic Planning Unit, Malaysia, one of expert in promoting sustainability leadership with Academic Leadership for Higher Education of Malaysia (AKEPT), Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (2011 – now) and a resource person under CONNECT-Asia, UNESCO (United Nation Education, Science and Culture Organization) Science Berau Asia Pacific (2013 – now). She is also one of the Board of Advisor of the first International Islamic EcoGreen School in Malaysia.
